People 2 People – Right 2 Act in Ankara, Turkey

PERSONlogowith text

A conference in Turkey, called the Anti-Discrimination and Equality Framework on the Way to EU Conference, was organised on 12th and 13th March 2015 in Ankara by TACSO Turkey in collaboration with Kaos GL Association and Human Rights Joint Platform. RUSİHAK found opportunity to share PERSON Network’s Right to Act Campaign even before it has started.

Representatives from fifty eight civil society organisations (CSO) and institutions were present at the conference and sixteen persons made presentations throughout the two days conference. The aim of the event was to raise awareness of CSOs on anti-discrimination and equality and thus enhance their advocacy efforts on the way to EU regarding these issues in respective countries. The conference was organised within the framework of People to People (P2P) component of the TACSO Project.

On the second day of the Conference, on 13th of March, Didem Tekeli, RUSİHAK’s PERSON co-ordinator, made a presentation on Article 12 of CRPD. Her presentation started with the information that the term ‘legal capacity’ is only ‘capacity to have rights’ in official Turkish version of the Convention. Tekeli then explained how the Convention defines ‘legal capacity’ and ended her presentation by hinting the PERSON campaign which started on 10th April 2015. (Tekeli will elaborate on issues of translation in our upcoming blog in our series on language, translation and the CRPD.)

A group of participants signed the Declaration of Right to Act Campaign and showed their solidarity with the PERSON team by posing to cameras with the campaign’s motto.
