Mental Disability Rights International – Serbia (MDRI-S) will act!
These photos were uploaded from Belgrade this weekend. MDRI-S Serbia has worked extremely hard to restore legal capacity to thousands of people with disabilities in Serbia. Their work includes training judges on human rights developments around the European Court of Human Rights and the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. MDRI-S has accumulated information about the extent of rights violations against people with disability in Serbia that simply didn’t exist before. Only when we know the extent of the violations can we truly call on governments to act.
MDRI-S is an advocacy organization dedicated to the human rights and full participation in society of children and adults with mental disabilities in Serbia. MDRI-S promotes citizen participation, awareness and oversight for the rights of persons with intellectual and psycho-social disabilities, and participates in development of mental disability rights advocacy and self-advocacy movement in Serbia. It is focused on human rights monitoring in residential institutions, providing education on international human rights standards for persons with disabilities in Serbia, advocating the government for effective reform of laws that compromise the human rights of persons with disabilities, and decreasing stigma through promoting community inclusion.
